Students enrolled in Business Ownership & Management, and Woodworking, two courses offered at William Floyd High School, recently visited Riverhead Building Supply for an up-close look at the inner workings of a manufacturing and distribution center.

During the visit, students received an overview of the company, a rundown of the day’s schedule, and a tour – complete with safety gear on – of the company’s bulk material stocking and organizational processes. Students also visited the corporate offices, met with the organization’s director of human resources to discuss job applications, resumes and employment expectations. Students then engaged in a question-and-answer session with human resources representatives and had an opportunity to network with executives.

“Riverhead Building Supply is a valued member of our advisory board and an important member in our Business, CTE, and Technology programs,” said Jacqueline Giacalone, Business & Technology Chairperson, and Business Education teacher, William Floyd High School. “To earn their program endorsements, students are required to complete 54 hours of work-based learning. These experiences are essential in helping students develop real-world skills, apply classroom knowledge in authentic settings, and prepare for future success.”

Business Ownership & Management is a full-year course for grades 10 through 12, in which students learn how to create a business plan and provide students with a background in starting and managing a small business. Juniors and seniors have the option to take this course for college credit through Farmingdale State College or through the Beacon Program at Suffolk County Community College.

Woodworking is a one-year course for students in grades 10 through 12 where students have the opportunity to develop practical skills and explore the art of working with wood. Through hands-on activities, students learn about the different types of wood, tools, and techniques used in the craft. Whether it’s building furniture, crafting intricate designs, or constructing functional objects, woodworking offers students a chance to unleash their imagination and create beautiful pieces from this versatile material.

Students enjoyed all aspects of this field trip to Riverhead Building Supply, which is part of an overall effort by the William Floyd High School Business Education and Career and Technical Education departments to form lasting relationships with employers and members of the business community, who are often instrumental in helping students learn the skills and connections that are beneficial to them in their futures. Special thanks to Riverhead Building Supply for hosting William Floyd students!
