North Palm Beach native recognized by Naval Education and Training Command

INVESTIGATORS SAY 33 YEAR OLD STEVEN SCANTLEBURY BEAT THE NURSE, IDENTIFIED BY HER DAUGHTER AS LEILA, AND BROKE ALMOST EVERY BONE IN HER FACE AT PALMS WEST HOSPITAL. THAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK ON THE TREASURE COAST. THE CAUSE OF A BRIGHTLINE CRASH THAT INJURED THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER OF A VEHICLE IN JENSEN BEACH IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. THIS HAPPENED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. THESE WERE PICTURES THE MARTIN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS BOTH PEOPLE IN THE CAR HAD TO BE AIRLIFTED TO THE HOSPITAL OVER THE WEEKEND. MORE THAN 150 PEOPLE ATTENDED A BENEFIT CONCERT IN WELLINGTON FOR THE FAMILIES OF THE THREE PALM BEACH COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES KILLED IN A TRAGIC CRASH. SILENT AUCTIONS, RAFFLES AND A SOLD OUT BENEFIT CONCERT HELPED RAISE MORE THAN SIXTY EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS. DEPUTY IGNACIO “DAN” DIAZ DEPUTY RALPH “BUTCH” WALLER AND CORPORAL LUIS PAEZ WERE STRUCK BY AN SUV WHILE THEY WERE PULLED OVER ON SOUTHERN BOULEVARD LAST NOVEMBER. John Merten was recognized as the 2024 Naval Education and Training Command Military Instructor of the Year on Feb. 20.According to Naval Education and Training Command, Merten is a primary instructor for Naval ROTC classes in evolution of warfare I and II, NROTC Unit, The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.NETC added Merten was one of five instructors acknowledged for their dedication in training future warfighters for service.“Leading Marines in any capacity is an honor that few Americans have the privilege to experience,” Merten said in a statement provided by the Naval Education and Training Command. “The sacrifice and hard work of the Marines I have served with inspire my passion for training the next generation of honorable Marine leaders. A native of North Palm Beach was recently recognized by the Navy.
